Descripción general
Semaglutide is a long-acting GLP-1 receptor agonist built from a 31 amino acid modified peptide sequence designed for once-weekly dosing. Its structure derives from native GLP-1, with a fatty acid side chain attached at Lys26 to extend half-life.
Farmacología y mecanismo
Activates the GLP-1 receptor, promoting glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying and acting on hypothalamic appetite centers. The effect is glucose-dependent, so hypoglycemia risk is low.
Áreas de investigación
Widely studied in type 2 diabetes metabolic control, obesity management and cardiovascular risk reduction. Active research directions include neurodegenerative disease, NAFLD and addictive behavior modulation.
Notas estructurales
31 amino acid modified peptide with a C18 diacid side chain and γGlu plus 2x OEG linker for prolonged albumin binding.
